Treatment Principles

Each in-depth client consultation provides vital information to devise an holistic treatment plan using a combination of:

  • A Western orthodox clinical approach – using knowledge of pathophysiology, anatomy & physiology and the proven actions of the chemical components of essential oils on the mind and body.
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine Five Elements Cycle to analyse and identify any imbalances (excesses or deficiencies) in the Elements which show themselves through various associated signs, symptoms and pathologies.  The treatment plan will focus on either tonifying (strengthening), sedating (calming) or dispersing Qi using specific acupressure points and meridian work associated with the identified Element/s.  Essential oil are selected for their energetic properties and how they relate to each of the Elements.  The focus is to restore balance to the cycle and in turn to the body.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Five Element Theory

The goal of Eastern medicine is to bring the entire body, physical, emotional and spiritual), into balance, rather than just treat the presenting symptoms.

This philosophy views the universe as a combination of Five Elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal & Water, through which Qi flows.  These elements naturally exist in a state of balance and harmony throughout the Universe and in the human body.

Health is defined as the free circulation of Qi resulting from a balance of Yin and Yang energy.  When this flow is disrupted, dis-ease occurs.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the mind and body are inextricably linked so our emotional state can cause imbalances in the same way that trauma to our physical body can.  Indeed, emotions are considered to be one of the major causes of disease as they are an expression of the flow of Qi within us.

All emotions are healthy, they are our way of using our voice, of communicating to the world who we are, what we think and what we stand for.  Whilst it is completely normal to feel sad, depressed or angry at times, it is when these emotions are repressed, prolonged or inappropriate that they become a source of dis-ease, resulting in physical and psychological symptoms and illnesses.

A physical ailment or symptom is seen as a reflection or indication of disharmony in the mind, body or spirit.  To cure it, the root cause must be found and treated to return the system to balance.  Other external causes of dis-ease are believed to be; climate, lifestyle, diet, poor constitution, over work and physical trauma.

This view is in stark contrast to the Western medical approach of viewing the physical body and its associated symptoms in isolation from the mind and emotions and treating the symptoms themselves without necessarily looking for a root cause.  Often these symptoms are then medicated to ‘quiet’ them so that life can go on as normal, often leading to worse health problems further down the road.

Excess Qi, deficient Qi or stagnant Qi will result in Element imbalances and their associated symptoms, thus an individual’s state of health manifests itself according to the balance between these elements.

Five Element analysis seeks to identify any weak or strong element through observation and a thorough client consultation process.  This information is vital in order to focus treatment on restoring balance to the cycle.  One or a combination of the following treatment principles are used to treat the deficient or excess Element/s:

  • Strengthening /tonifying deficient Qi
  • Sedating excessive Qi
  • Dispersing stagnant Qi – rather than being deficient, Qi is stagnant and fails to flow properly.  Focus is to smooth and regulate its flow.

Qi (energy), flows in channels called Meridians (energy pathways) to the Mind and to all the organs and tissues in the body.  Any blockage in an energy pathway will cause ‘dis-ease’ and will need to be cleared by stimulating points situated along these pathways. In acupuncture the points are stimulated with needles, in acupressure massage, we concentrate on the same points with specific massage techniques to clear congestion.

Acupressure massage stimulates the body’s self-healing ability and strengthens vitality.  It alleviates stress and increases relaxation.  It treats the person rather than the symptoms or the disease.

When Qi flow is balanced you feel relaxed, calm, confident, motivated, focused, full of energy and enthusiasm with a positive outlook.

When Qi flow is deficient, blocked or stagnant, energy levels are low, muscles and joints are stiff and ache, thinking is muddled, focus is poor, mood is low and there is a general feeling lethargy and fatigue.

It is important to take the time to find and maintain this balance to ensure optimum health for your future.
